Debby Humphreys (4 Cats Upcycled Denim Handbags)

How did your crafting journey begin? Was it a childhood passion, a hobby that grew into something bigger, or an unexpected discovery?

Since I was a little girl, I remember sitting with my mom in her sewing room, watching her sew dresses for herself, my sister and me. My mother took great joy in making clothes for us, and as far back as I can remember, she never used a commercial sewing pattern. I think that early exposure to her creativity planted a seed that has stayed with me throughout my life.

I was taught to knit and crochet when I was about ten years old, and my sewing skills developed further during high school. We learnt the basics in primary school, followed by bigger sewing projects in the years that followed. Over the years, I made clothes for myself and my children, even going as far as making cot sets as baby shower gifts.

My passion for sewing has always been there, but three years ago, I took the step towards becoming a professional crafter, designing and making handbags using upcycled denim and a variety of fabrics. And so, 4 Cats began — bringing together a lifelong love of sewing, creativity and the joy of making something unique.

What do you love most about creating your handmade products? Tell us what brings you joy and keeps you inspired.

I love seeing the joy my handbags bring to the people who discover them. I love watching them feel the fabrics, admire the details and talk about the bag. Sometimes, a particular fabric or design brings back memories of their own sewing experiences — perhaps bags or clothes they once made themselves. Those moments are incredibly special to me because my creations connect with people in ways that go beyond simply being a handbag.
My bags are my creative art. Each one is individually designed and made with loving hands, with hours of thought, care and construction going into the finished piece. I love working with different fabrics and textures, giving them new life and creating something that is both beautiful and practical. Knowing that each bag has its own personality and may become part of someone else’s story is what brings me the greatest joy and keeps me inspired.

What does it mean to you when someone buys one of your handmade creations? Help our customers understand the difference their support makes in your life.

When you purchase a bag from 4 Cats, you are purchasing a little piece of love, carefully designed and crafted in my sewing room. Every bag is an individual creation, made with care, creativity and many hours of work.

Your purchase means so much more than simply buying a handbag. It supports me as an independent crafter and allows me to continue doing what I love. It also creates a special connection between you, me and 4 Cats.

And when I say a 4 Cats bag is made to last, believe me when I say denim doesn’t go anywhere in a hurry! My hope is that your bag will bring you years of happiness, become a much-loved companion and carry a little piece of my creativity wherever you go.

You are deserving of something special, something individual, and something made with love. Thank you for choosing handmade and for being part of the 4 Cats journey.

If your creations could tell a story, what would you want that story to be? What little piece of yourself do you hope customers take home with every purchase?

We were created from carefully selected upcycled denim and fabrics, each chosen for its character and potential, and lovingly given a second chance. At 4 Cats, we believe in giving materials a new lease on life, helping our planet and keeping our footprint of waste as small as possible.

Our name, 4 Cats, reflects the crafter’s love for her cats, while each bag reflects her lifelong passion for sewing, her creativity and her love of making something truly unique.

Every bag has its own story, shaped by the fabrics chosen, the design and the hands that bring it to life. When you carry a 4 Cats bag, I hope you carry a little piece of Debby with you — my love of sewing, my creativity and the care that goes into every stitch.

I hope your bag reminds you that beautiful things can come from unexpected places, that something old can be transformed into something wonderful, and that there is always life in the things we choose to give a second chance.
